Call me CRAZY!

My one and ONLY nephew will be turning one in May.
His mom is throwing him a birthday party (of course-who would not!).

She mentioned that we could not invite all of our side of the family because too many of "their friends and family" were already coming.

Totally understandable. You do not want to overwhelm the poor little fella.

Here is the CRAZY part.. I am having problems deciding if I am the crazy one or if they are.

I offered to have another 1st birthday part at our house so they could invite the rest of the family. (Having 3 kids of my own, I would personally LOVE to have someone offer this to me!-but that is beside the point).

The reply I recieved (after a week of silence) was almost angry. I got the following snippets from the large email sent back:

"yea, this touched a nerve with us."

"we felt somewhat insulted that you didn't think our party for (DS) was going to be good enough."

"...when you said you wanted to throw him a birthday party I felt completely put down. Like you were trying to take something so special away from me."

"For you to suggest having a party at your house amongst a majority of people (*his relatives) he doesnt know or feel comfortable with just doesnt seem right"

Is the offer of a second party inappropriate of me to even suggest? I was trying to help have a great 1st birthday party by trying to include the whole family (there are not many children at least on our side).

If anything I was thinking all they had to say was "No Thank You!" the hostility is disturbing me. Now that is going to be a "thing" hanging there in the air whever I see them. :(

*sigh*
Call me crazy.

I find with family it is just better not to suggest anything. My family is so large, for example when we had a family reunion in Pittsburgh, food was a big deal and many were coming from out of town. I suggested that we have it catered and I got the most insensitive emails and phone calls from my relatives, saying we are wealthy and they are not. Some were even telling me that I am not a country girl anymore, that Chicago had taken over my identity. Really funny. My mom understood. It was really weird feeling.

Yea, well that makes me think that "we" are not good enough to trhow a party for them. They actually have more $ than we do. But I guess I was thinking more along the lines of "gee if someone threw me a party that would be AWESOME!"

Still feel grumbly though.
